PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
In reviewing the message and the meaning of Our Lady’s Apparition at La Salette, we will take a contemporary, contemplative approach to living the message in our times. We’ll examine the historical context and the lives of Melanie and Maximum, the two children to whom She appeared, as well as Our Lady’s prediction of the European famine of the 1840’s. How may we apply the La Salette message of reconciliation to our lives?.

On Saturday, September 19, 1846, a beautiful clear autumn day, the Virgin Mary appeared to Maximin Giraud, age 11, and Melanie Mathieu, age 14, on a mountain near the town of La Salette, some 6,000 feet high in the French Alps. The two children had first met the day before while tending cows on the slopes. At La Salette, Mary appeared in a very bright light blazing over the bench of stones where the children had sat for lunch. She was seated on the stones, her elbows on her knees and her face buried in her hands: she was weeping. Then the Beautiful Lady rose, and reassured the two children with the opening words of her message: “Come near, my children, don’t be afraid. I am here to tell you great news.”
After five years of careful study and investigation, the Bishop of Grenoble (France), Philibert de Bruillard, pronounce his positive judgement on the apparition of La Salette: “We judge that the Apparition of the Blessed Virgin to two shepherds, September 19, 1846, on a mountain in the Alps, in the parish of La Salette… shows all the signs of truth and the faithful have grounds for believing it indubitable and certain.” |
Since that time, countless graces have continually flowed into the world from the mountain of La Salette. Among them, the creation of the religious community of the Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette, that of the Sisters of Our Lady of La Salette, and the La Salette Lay Associates.
Today, the Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette count about 1,000 priests and brothers serving in over twenty countries around the world. In Attleboro, Massachusetts, the Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette, in collaboration with the Sisters of Our Lady of La Salette, the La Salette Associates and volunteers, are responsible for the National Shrine of Our Lady of La Salette and for La Salette Retreat & Conference Center.. |
